Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present commercial capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department in a 25-acre coconut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka. The aim of the orphanage is to simulate a natural habitat to these elephants. However, there are some exceptions: the elephants are taken to the river twice a day for a bath, and all the babies less than three years of age are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers. Each animal is also given around 76 kg of green matter a day and around 2 kg from a food bag containing rice bran and maize. The orphanage which boasts to have the largest herd of captive elephants in the world is very popular and visited daily by many Sri Lankan and foreign tourists. The main attraction is clearly to observe the elephants bathing which is quite a spectacle.
Times to visit the Orphanage The centre opens at 8.30 in the morning and closes at 6pm daily. Bottle feeding is at 9.15am, 1.15pm & 5pm and bathing times at the river is at 10am and 2pm.
The bathing hours are followed up by the feeding hour at the main center of the orphanage. Baby elephants are bottle fed. Selected visitors have a chance of bottle-feeding milk to the baby elephants.
After an orphanage continue to Kandy.
Checking to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 - KANDY CITY TOUR
Kandy is the old capital of Ceylon and the seat of the last Singhalese kingdom. It is a charming city with the most important Buddhist temple in the country and is set around an ancient artificial lake amongst rolling hills that are covered by forests and tea plantations. Set in the mountainous area of the island, there are fantastic views over the city from some of the hotels. Wandering about in Kandy is a fun experience, with crossroads and interconnecting byroads – all forming an intertwined complex. Most pavements are dominated by vendors selling garments, lotteries, toys and various fancy items – making passing through look almost impossible, especially during festive seasons. The main market area in the heart of the town is frequented often for its array of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and meat stalls, sweets, clothes, fancy goods and what not…!
Kandy is a great place to buy gemstones. Sapphires of all colours, rubies, tourmalines and spinels can all be found here. Visitors are also invited to have a look around their workshop, where they will be able to see the design and cutting, polishing and setting processes. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha in the late afternoon.
Ever since it was founded in the 16th Century, it has housed one of the most sacred relics of Buddhism – a tooth of Buddha collected from his funeral pyre and which is now protected within the gold-roofed Temple of the Tooth. See the blessing ceremony with all the fanfare, drums, trumpets and brightly coloured Monks performing their rituals. There is also local traditional cultural dance performance which you will enjoy in the town in the late afternoon. End of the day checking to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

After lunch returned in the same way by walking, catamaran and bullock cart. Sometimes they will provide tuk tuk also. This tour called “Village tour”. This is a new concept, foreigners really happy to do this. Then proceed to Sigiriya the “The Lion Mountain”. The complex of the fortress on the plains around the rock extends over 15 hectares.
SIGIRIYA
The legendary sky citadel of Sigiriya, the “Lion Rock” famous for its frescoes of ‘Celestial Maidens’ is possibly the most impressive site in Sri Lanka. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century (477 495 AD) on top of a vast 200m granite rock from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70-hectare fortified town. A moat, rampart and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock. It took seven years to build and was abandoned after ten years of occupation when the King, defeated by his brother, committed suicide. Although it is a steep climb, the views and frescoes are definitely worth the effort. Sigiriya is best visited first thing in the morning or just before sunset when it is cooler and less crowded. This area is famous for “Ayurveda herbal massage” is done by well-experienced therapists. No chemicals, only herbs. Please let me know before one day to reserve your massage. Also you can have a Minneriya, Kaudulla or Eco-park safari by hired 4x4 vehicle. This is the ideal location in Sri Lanka to see sometimes hundreds of wild elephants in one place.
