Day 2 -Begin your day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel and check out to embark on an exciting journey to Kandy. On your way to Kandy, we will take you on a fascinating visit to the Pinnawala elephant orphanage.
Located between the cities of Colombo and Kandy,
The Pinnawala elephant orphanage is a must-see attraction that provides a unique opportunity to observe and interact with the gentle giants of the island. Established in 1975, the orphanage is home to over 70 elephants who have been rescued from various situations such as orphaned calves, abandoned elephants, and elephants that were injured in the wild.
You will have the chance to witness the daily routines of these majestic creatures, such as their bathing time and feeding time. The sight of these massive animals playing in the water and taking mud baths is truly mesmerizing. You will also have the opportunity to feed them and even take a walk with them through the lush greenery surrounding the orphanage.
After spending quality time with the elephants,
we will continue our journey to Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka.
Kandy is a charming city that is home to many historical and cultural landmarks, including the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is considered to be one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists around the world.
Kandy, the distinguished ancient hill capital of Sri Lanka, is located approximately 116km away from the bustling commercial capital of Colombo. Renowned for its rich Sinhalese history, culture, religion, and pageantry, Kandy is a city steeped in historical significance. It was the seat of the Kandyan Kingdom, the last independent state in Sri Lanka that successfully resisted the attacks of three European invaders for over two centuries. The Kandyan monarch was revered by the islanders as their own ruler, and Kandy was considered the final stronghold of independent Buddhist philosophy, providing spiritual fortitude and virtue to its people.
Kandy is an ideal location for walking tours, with its elevated position providing a refreshing and cool climate that encourages long walks. The city boasts narrow streets adorned with historic buildings and bustling crowds, providing a visually rich experience for visitors. The Municipal Market offers an array of exquisite displays of fresh fruits, vegetables, textiles, and clothing, while the man-made lake serves as a stunning centerpiece in the heart of the city.
Checking to Thilanka hotel for overnight stay.
Kandy is a great place to buy gemstones, sapphires of all colours, rubies, tourmalines and many precious and semiprecious stones can all be found here. Visitors are also invited to have a look around the workshops, where they will be able to see the design, cutting, polishing and setting processes. There is a local traditional dance performance which you will enjoy in the town in the late afternoon after the show visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.(Sri Dalada Maligawa) Ever since it was founded in the 16th century, it has one of the most sacred relics of Buddhism – a tooth of the Buddha collected from his funeral pyre and which is now protected within the gold – roofed temple of the tooth. It was built within the royal palace complex which houses the only surviving relic of Buddha, a tooth, which is venerated by Buddhists. The relic has played an important role in the local politics since ancient times; it’s believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country, which caused the ancient kings to protect it with great effort. Kandy was the capital of the Sinhalese kings from 1592 to 1815, fortified by the terrain of the mountains and the difficult approach. The city is a world heritage site declared by UNESCO in part due to the temple.
End of the day return to hotel for overnight stay.
KANDY - NUWARAELIYA
Day 4 - The day starts after a delicious breakfast, and we will proceed to Nuwaraeliya, traveling through scenic tea gardens. We will visit a tea factory, where you can witness the tea-making process before it reaches us. Upon arrival in Nuwaraeliya, we will check into a comfortable Grand Hotel hotel for an overnight stay.
At an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) above sea level, Nuwara Eliya is also known as the "City on the plain (table land)" or "city of light". It was founded by Samuel Baker, the explorer of the Nile, in 1846. The town's climate made it the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon. Dubbed as "Little England," it was a hill country retreat where the British colonialists could indulge in their pastimes such as fox hunting, deer hunting, elephant hunting, polo, golf, and cricket.
Although the town was founded by the British in the 19th century, it is now a popular destination for native travelers, particularly during April, the season of flowers, pony races, go-cart races, and auto rally.
The town boasts of many buildings that still retain features from the colonial period, such as the Queen's Cottage, General's House, Grand Hotel, Hill Club, Town Post Office, and newly built hotels furnished in colonial style. Landmark buildings such as these offer visitors the opportunity to wallow in the nostalgia of bygone days. Many private homes still maintain their old English-style lawns and gardens.
In addition, Gregory's Park is a beautiful place to visit, with a variety of activities such as paddling boats, pony rides, and cycling available for reasonable rates. The weather is perfect for enjoying the outdoors. Many rich Sri Lankans have holiday homes or villas in Nuwara Eliya, making it the ideal location for nature lovers.
