Day 02 - ANURADHAPURA - CITY TOR - ISURUMUNIYA - MIHINTALE
After breakfast visit the largest and oldest of Sri Lanka’s ancient cities and dates back to the 6th century BC. It was made capital in 377 BC and remained an important centre of power till the 12th century AD. When the capital moved further south. The city was quite large in its heyday, and so there is a lot of archaeology to see. Most memorable are its gleaming white dagabos (pagoda) – large bell-like structures some over 100meters high which house for Buddhist Relics. However, it is the best known for the Sri Maha bodhi, which is the oldest documented tree in the world. (Over 2200 years). This was grown from a cutting of the Bo tree under which Buddha archived enlightenment, and has been continuously guarded for over 2000 years, making it the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world. The tour of the ancient kingdoms is very enlightening. The temple complex is surrounded by walls, and is quite busy with monks and worshipers. Enjoy it; Shoes can be left near the entrance. It is polite to leave a tip. Also visit Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Mirisavetiya, Abhayagiriya, Jethavanaramaya, Twin ponds, Moonstone and many more… remember to carry a hat along, with a bottle of water and some sun lotion….!
Then visit Isurumuniya,
Isurumuniya -The temple was built by King Devanampiyatissa who ruled in the ancient Sri Lankan capital of Anuradhapura. After 500 children of high-caste were ordained, Isurumuniya was built for them to reside. King Kashyapa I (473-491 AD) renovated this Vihara and named it as "Boupulvan, Kasubgiri Radmaha Vehera". This name is derived from names of his 2 daughters and his name. There is a Viharaya connected to a cave and above is a cliff. A small stupa is built on it. It can be seen that the constructional work of this stupa belong to the present period. Lower down on both sides of a cleft, in a rock that appears to rise out of a pool, have been carved the figures of elephants. On the rock is carved the figure of a horse. The Isurumuniya rock temple houses a famous 5th c.AD Indian style sculpture known as the “Lovers”. On the slab has been brought from another place and placed it there. A few yards away from this vihara is the Ranmasu Uyana. Then return to Palm Garden Village Hotel for overnight stay. Then visit Mihintale.
Mihintale is regarded as the cradle of Sri Lankan Buddhism since it is here that in 248 BC King Tissa whilst hunting met monk Mahinda with Sri Maha Bodhi tree who converted him and his 4000 followers to Buddhism. It is a sapling of the bo tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, and is symbolic of the most significant event of Tissa's reign, you reach the impressive temple complex via a spectacular ancient grand stairway of 1840 steps. Not as tough as it sounds since they are very shallow and most are in the shades of perfumed Frangipani. Return to the hotel Palm Garden Village for overnight stay.

The reason that makes Pigeon Island National Park more unique than the rest of the national parks the country has to boast of is that it´s the only national park to harbour a colony of the most beautiful Blue Rock pigeons. The national park also contains some of the best remaining coral reefs of Sri Lanka. Many of the 100 species of corals and 300 coral reef fishes recorded around the Trincomalee area are found in the national park. Juvenile and adult Black-tip reef shark are seen around the shallow coral areas whilst, Hawksbill turtle, Green turtle and Olive Ridley are the visiting sea turtles of the coral reef. This adventurous yet breathtaking tour of the Island´s National Park should undoubtedly be a highlight in your itinerary.
KONESWARAM TEMPLE Among the various monuments of Hindu antiquity found in Sri Lanka, the Thirukoneswaram Hindu temple in Trincomalee is one of the three principal places of worship dedicated to God Siva. The Koneswaram temple as it is commonly known, a sacred place of Hindu worship of the ancient past, would have remained in its original form up to the present day, had it not been destroyed in the 17th century by the Portuguese, who called it the Temple of a Thousand Columns. As the legendary story goes, a Portuguese soldier once entered the shrine room and defiled it by his presence as he was under the influence of alcohol. The wrath of God having fallen on the man for his unholy behavior in disrespecting the holy place has fallen accidentally into the sea below and drowned.
A Portuguese historian not only describes the exact location of the temple but goes further by describing it as the "Rome of the Orient more frequented by pilgrims than Rameshwaram or Jeganath in Orissa".

It was built within the Royal palace complex which houses the only surviving relic of Buddha, a tooth, which is venerated by Buddhists. The relic has played an important role in the local politics since ancient times; it’s believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country, which caused the ancient kings to protect it with great effort.
