HISTORY OF THE TOOTH RELIC OF BUDDHA IN SRI LANKA

HISTORY OF THE TOOTH RELIC OF BUDDHA IN SRI LANKA

THE SACRED TOOTH RELIC

The Sacred Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka during the 4th century CE, when the reigning king was King Kirti Sri Meghavanna. Princess Hemamala and her husband, Prince Dantha, who were the daughter and son-in-law of the Indian Emperor Ashoka, presented the relic to King Kirti Sri Meghavanna. He enshrined the Sacred Tooth Relic in a stupa known as "Maha Meghavanna Uposathagara" in the ancient city of Anuradhapura. This marked the beginning of the veneration of the relic and the establishment of Buddhism as a prominent religion in Sri Lanka.

The initial resting place of the Sacred Tooth Relic was in Anuradhapura, which was the ancient capital and a significant center of Buddhism in the country. However, over the centuries, the relic was moved to various locations for protection during periods of turmoil and war before finding its final and current resting place in the Temple of the Tooth or Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is now one of the most revered religious sites in Sri Lanka, attracting pilgrims and visitors from around the world. The enshrinement of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds immense importance in Sri Lankan history and is considered a pivotal moment in the island nation's Buddhist heritage.

"We are an older couple celebrating a lot of years of marriage (and hiking) in Sri Lanka in February this year, for two weeks, and three days in the Maldives. Although we love to drive, we chose to go with a driver-guide, after planning the trip completely independently. (It turned out he might help us in the planning and selection of hotels, we own). The main advantage is reaching the sites, some of which are tired, refreshed after someone else used to bad roads, with bad signage - If you are i..." Sam
