Udawattakele, located in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka, is a lush and ancient forest reserve that offers an enchanting escape into nature's embrace. Udawattakele, often referred to as "Udawatta Kele Sanctuary" or simply "Udawatta Kele," is a protected forest reserve that was once a royal pleasure garden for the Kandyan kings. It holds significant historical, cultural, and ecological importance, making it a unique destination in Sri Lanka.
One of the main reasons to explore Udawattakele is its remarkable biodiversity. This forest reserve is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including rare and endemic species. While tracking through the forest, you may encounter vibrant bird species like the Layard's Parakeet and the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, as well as various mammals, including macaques and giant squirrels.
Udawattakele offers breathtaking natural beauty with its dense canopies, glistening streams, and serene walking paths. The forest trails are well-maintained, allowing you to immerse yourself in the lush greenery and discover hidden waterfalls and viewpoints along the way.
Amidst the bustling city of Kandy, Udawattakele offers a peaceful retreat. The tranquil atmosphere of the forest makes it an ideal spot for meditation, yoga, or simply unwinding in the lap of nature.
Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. It's also advisable to carry a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
The best time to visit Udawattakele is during the early morning or late afternoon when the weather is cooler, and wildlife is more active.
