You are here: Home / Destinations / NEGOMBO FISH MARKET
The Negombo Fish Market is the second largest fish market in the Island. The local people call it Llelama. The fish market is situated near the Old Dutch Fort Gate and held every day except Sundays. According to the statistics of the Sri Lankan Fisheries Department, Negombo fish production for the year 2009 was 20,010MT and 28,250MT in the following year 2010. It’s about 8.4% from the total Sri Lanka’s fish production. Many visitors to the city do not forget to visit the fish market even for once. Yet, for many tourists, it is not a pleasurable experience due to the stinking smell it pervades. On the other hand, a high number of people reach here for seeing, purchasing, and selling the fishes taken from the deep sea by the local fishermen wearing variety of coloured clothes. The shouting becomes unbearable as the day fades. Nevertheless, this is one place that people can see heap of fishes in many varieties at one place which maybe amazing sights for many people local and foreign. Small fishes such as shrimps, prawns, lobsters, crabs etc., are the ones that can be seen as huge heaps. Variety of large fishes is also common sights in the fish market. Fishermen sitting by large heaps of fishes shouting at their best is
irritating for many tourists. Yet, seeing them in coloured sarongs, wearing large hats can be attractive as well. At various places in the market, fishermen who cut giant fishes into small pieces in accordance with the quantities demanded by the purchasers are common sights. It is advisable to take some water when visiting the Negombo fish market since the place gets very hot at noon. The Negombo South Fisheries Cooperative Society holds auctions here every day. Small, medium and big fish traders visit the auctions in large numbers. Fishes caught not only from the Negombo sea but also from other areas such as Wennappuwa, Marawila, Chilaw, Thoduwawa, Kudapaduwa, Kalpitiya are also transported to the Negombo Fish Market Auction. It is amazing to see such a large heap of fishes in many varieties gathered at one place like people see at Negombo Fish Auction. The prolonged war about 30 years and the huge Tsunami hit Sri Lanka at the end of the year 2004 devastated the Sri Lankan fish production to a great extent.

"We are an older couple celebrating a lot of years of marriage (and hiking) in Sri Lanka in February this year, for two weeks, and three days in the Maldives. Although we love to drive, we chose to go with a driver-guide, after planning the trip completely independently. (It turned out he might help us in the planning and selection of hotels, we own). The main advantage is reaching the sites, some of which are tired, refreshed after someone else used to bad roads, with bad signage - If you are i..." Sam
