UDAWALAWE

UDAWALAWE

Udawalawe, is a well-known destination famous for its wildlife, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. Here’s a detailed look at its situation, nature, and what you can do there.

Udawalawe is located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, mainly within the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces. It lies about 165 km from Colombo and 60 km from Ratnapura. The region is best known for Udawalawe National Park, which was established in 1972 to provide a sanctuary for wild animals, especially elephants, after the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir.

The climate is generally hot and dry, with occasional rainfall. The landscape is a mix of grasslands, scrub forests, and wetlands, making it an ideal habitat for diverse wildlife.

Udawalawe’s primary attraction is its rich wildlife, particularly elephants. The region is a transitional zone between Sri Lanka’s wet and dry zones, offering a unique ecosystem with open plains, jungle patches, and riverine forests.

Wildlife You Can See:

Sri Lankan Elephants – Over 600 elephants live in Udawalawe National Park.

Leopards – Rare, but sometimes spotted.

Crocodiles – Mugger crocodiles are found in lakes and rivers.

Deer Species – Sambar deer and spotted deer.

Sloth Bears – Though rare, they inhabit the park.

Birds – More than 200 species, including eagles, kingfishers, and hornbills.

The Udawalawe Reservoir is another important ecological feature, providing water for both wildlife and local communities.

"We are an older couple celebrating a lot of years of marriage (and hiking) in Sri Lanka in February this year, for two weeks, and three days in the Maldives. Although we love to drive, we chose to go with a driver-guide, after planning the trip completely independently. (It turned out he might help us in the planning and selection of hotels, we own). The main advantage is reaching the sites, some of which are tired, refreshed after someone else used to bad roads, with bad signage - If you are i..." Sam
