There are only seven species of marine turtles that inhabit the oceans of this world. Of these, five come to nest in Sri Lanka. These are the Green Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and the Loggerhead Turtle. The largest of these is the Green Turtle which can grow up to one meter in length and can weight 230 kg while the smallest is the Olive Ridley which measure about 65 cm in length and weighs about 40 kg. The nesting process exhibited by the female turtles in a delicate one. Nesting is done at night due to the fact that is cooler and the female is less conspicuous to predators.
The female will use her flippers in a swimming motion to dig a pit which is about 50 cm deeps. Around 120 eggs are laid at a time; each one is roughly the size of a tennis ball. Once the female is done laying her eggs she covers up the nest and disguises her tracks. After 60 days the eggs hatch. The young hatchlings then proceed to make their perilous journey to the seas and beyond. It is estimated that only one in a thousand on these hatchlings will survive to maturity. Little is known about turtles from the hatchling stage to the stage of maturity, except that females will return to the same beach where they were born to nest.
